BTEC Firsts Award in Performing Arts – Musical Theatre
Key Stage 4
This Level 2 course is offered at Key Stage 4 and taught by teachers from the Drama and Music Departments.
It is an ideal introduction to Musical Theatre, and provides a firm foundation for study at Level 3 (Years 12/13).
There are three units, which are outlined below.
Students study ‘Musical Theatre Skills’.
In the Autumn and Spring Terms, students will explore and develop their Musical Theatre skills of acting, dancing and singing, through study and performance of excerpts from Oklahoma!, West Side Story and Chicago. They will keep a log of their work and review their progress over the course of the unit.
In the Summer Term, students will rehearse an excerpt from Grease, combining their singing, acting and dancing skills in a final performance in front of an invited audience.
This unit (50% of the course) will be internally assessed by their teachers and externally verified by Pearson (Edexcel).
Students study ‘Preparation, Performance and Production’ in the Autumn Term.
Students will take part in the preparations and rehearsals for a live performance and demonstrate performance or production skills and techniques in the performance, which will be based on one of Grimms’ Fairy Tales.
This unit (25% of the course) will be internally assessed by their teachers and externally verified by Pearson.
Students study ‘Individual Showcase’ in the Spring Term.
Students select one of four briefs provided by Pearson. Each brief takes the form of an offer of work in the Musical Theatre industry, for which each student must produce a Letter of Application and a video of their skills in that area of the industry. Students will have the opportunity to discuss and prepare practice examples from past papers before they start work on their individual letters and performances.
This unit (25% of the course) is externally assessed by Pearson – the writing of the final letter and recording of the performance take place under exam conditions.
