Key Stage 4
Land Based studies is a BTEC course covering the following options.
Units to be covered -
- Planting a planter Unit 32 (3 credits) D/600/0293
- Seed propagation Unit 30 (2 Credits) D/502/4017
- Pests. Unit 31 (2 credits) M/502/4023
The course will consist of planting planters for various seasons and with a variety of plants. Students will need to prepare the ground for planting seeds which can be a mixture of veg and flowers. They will also propagate seeds in the green house and prepare planting mediums as appropriate. We will be looking at the common types of pest and how to control them in an organic way. Much of the work will undertaken outside so pupils will need suitable outdoor protective clothing and foot wear. These can be left in school if needed. All tools and gloves will be provided for students.
This is an exciting new course being offered for the first time and students will be able to make many of the decisions about how they go about developing the plot.

The course offers students an introduction to health and safety which will invaluable as many employers require employees to be familiar with the basics of health and safety and to be able to recognise the importance of such matters in the work place.
